DIGITALIZATION OF THE STRUGGLE OF THE LEAGUE FOR THE RIGHTS
OF WOMAN 1923-1989
Objective
The "Digitalization of the Struggle of the League for the Rights
of woman 1923-1967" programme aims at converting the magazine's
archives from analogue to digital form and storing its data in a
high-tech data base accessible via the website of the Panteion University's
centre for gender studies: (http://www.genderpanteion.gr).
Given that the balance of the programme depends on the provision
of a wide variety of reliable information, considerable importance
is attached to the digitalization initiative.
High-resolution digitalization (300 dpi tiff) has been carried out
on the magazine with a view to upgrading article quality. The magazine
has also been enriched with a range of additional information (metadata)
in accordance with the Dublin Core Metadata Schema.
Cataloguing and indexing of articles followed the Anglo-American
Cataloguing Rules 2, with thematic indexing organized on the basis
of the thematic headings of the Library of Congress as translated
by the National Library of Greece. The purpose of selecting the
specific models was that the programme should be oriented to both
national and international trends in the field.
Readers - male or female - of an electronic text - are thus enabled
to access specific information, entering combinations of words and
phrases, rapidly and with very great accuracy, utilizing appropriate
software. For example, if one clicks the arrow for the field Thematic
headings, the list appears of the words that have emerged from
processing of the digitalized articles in all numbers of the magazine.
From this list you choose the thematic heading that interests you,
click the "search" button and automatically there appear
on your screen all the articles that are relevant to the thematic
heading you have selected. A similar search procedure applies for
the fields: Date, Number and Writer.
You can also do a combined search, choosing a specific date from
the menu and typing the appropriate word in the "title"
field. You can also type the keyword that interests you in the anywhere
field and the search engine will seek out relevant entries in all
metadata fields of the data base. For example if you write the word
"Kazantzakis" in the field, the search engine will look
for the word in question in the fields: title, writer, thematic
heading, date and number.
Finally, you can save the text that interests you on your hard disc,
print it out or combine it with other electronic texts.
The arrangement of the data base is user-friendly. The information
search procedure is simple.
